The fire has passed, but the evidence is everywhere.
Blackened stems cross the forest while the ground remains grey with ash. Warm late-afternoon light catches surviving eucalyptus trunks, turning their bark almost orange against the burnt interior.
Then there is green.
Small shoots rise directly through the damaged ground, fragile but unmistakable. The photograph does not erase what happened or turn destruction into easy optimism. Damage and recovery exist together in the same frame. The new growth matters because the burnt forest is still visible around it.
Tomorrow has begun, but yesterday has not disappeared.
