Long Exposure B&W Photographs of Newcastle Icons
‘For this series I intentionally sought intersections—not just of light, shadow, and form, but of place and memory. I intend that these photographs invite viewers to engage with both the physical presence of Newcastle’s coastal icons and the personal or collective nostalgia they evoke.’
‘Intersections’ re-envisions Newcastle’s coastal landmarks not merely as documentary images but as poetic dialogues between place, memory, and light. Through long exposures and minimalist framing, Foley distills these iconic sites into elemental forms that provoke introspection and emotional depth.
Structures such as the rugged silhouette of Nobbys Headland, the geometric lines of Stockton Breakwater, and the subtle details of ocean pools are emphasized through stark contrast and clean tonality. These landmarks are reinterpreted as sculptural forms.
The long exposures also lend these images a serene, almost ethereal quality. Ocean surfaces become smooth, mist-like planes, while skies drift into delicate gradients, imbuing each scene with quiet stillness.
