I am interested less in grand views than in what makes me stop—a tree isolated against an enormous sky, mist settling between mountain ridges, water moving across rock, or the first green growth appearing through a burnt forest.
Some photographs describe an expansive landscape. Others move closer, reducing it to a fern, a rock formation or the marks left by fire. What connects them is light, weather, time and the moment when something familiar becomes worth looking at again.
The work spans more than one way of making photographs. Some images were made slowly on large- and medium-format film; others digitally or with the camera that happened to be with me. The equipment changes. The process of looking does not.
Fire and recovery recur through the collection. So do isolation, weather and the persistence of the land. A tree can become a figure. Mist can remove almost everything except layers of tone. New growth can appear where only days earlier the landscape seemed lost.
I don't photograph the Australian landscape to explain it. I photograph the moments when it reveals something I hadn't expected to find.
