As the sun set behind me at Dudley Beach, I looked east. I have always liked looking away from the obvious.
There, against the deep blue of the evening sky, a long bank of clouds caught the last orange and red light. The contrast lasted only briefly: intense colour held against darkening cloud and the cooler sky around it.
Made on Fuji Velvia film with a Hasselblad XPan camera, the panoramic format lets that changing light stretch across the frame. For me, the picture is less about the sunset itself than about noticing what the light was doing somewhere else.
