Kelp, Black and White #1696

from $450.00

Washed ashore at Blacksmiths Beach, the kelp has become temporarily separated from the sea that shaped it. Against the pale sand it reads almost as a found sculpture—folded, textured and strangely animate.

During the exposure the incoming tide remained beyond it while a strong nor'easter moved its finer edges. The result holds both stillness and movement within the same small subject.

I often think of the shoreline as a place of exchange.

Things arrive.

For a while they belong to the land.

Then the sea takes them again.
