A solitary tree stands surrounded by the pale water of a coastal wetland at Salamander Bay. The long exposure removes almost every disturbance from the surface, leaving the trunk, twisting branches and their faint reflection suspended within an unusually quiet space.

I had watched this place change over years. Trees accustomed to the regular movement of tides were increasingly surrounded by water, and eventually many succumbed.

The photograph is quiet rather than dramatic. That seems important.

Landscape change does not always announce itself. Sometimes it can be seen in a tree that once stood beside the water and now stands within it.
