Sunrise #4873 began as a study of time and water. An extended exposure allows the moving sea to flow softly across the rock shelf while algae, stone and the harder structure of the coastline remain sharply present.
But the photograph also contains something I didn't see while making it. Two slightly blurred seagulls on the rock shelf were caught together by fishing line and hooks. I only discovered their predicament afterwards, when a surfer asked for help. What had appeared to be a quiet landscape became evidence of an event already unfolding inside the frame.
Sometimes a photograph knows more than the photographer.
