At Jounama Creek, the surrounding landscape had disappeared into the night when I used a handheld light to reveal this tree. For a few seconds its trunk, branches and extraordinary network of fine twigs emerged from the blackness, isolated from everything around it.
The photograph transforms an ordinary tree into something almost sculptural. Without horizon, sky or surrounding landscape to provide scale or context, there is only the tree and the light that describes it. Every branch seems to reach outward before eventually dissolving back into darkness.
Photography is often described as capturing light. Here, light does something more: it temporarily makes the unseen visible.
The landscape was always there. For a moment, I simply found this part of it.
