At Werri Beach, sea, shoreline and sky remain, but detail has disappeared. A narrow blue horizon floats between two pale fields, enough information to suggest a place without fully describing it.
The defocus is not simply an aesthetic device. The photograph grew from a period when my own eyesight had become uncertain following surgery. I waited for detail to return without knowing whether it would. The familiar experience of looking towards a horizon became something different: an attempt to see through uncertainty.
For years I have used horizons as places to daydream—to look outward while memories, ideas and photographs not yet made drift through my thoughts. Here, the horizon becomes both distant landscape and an expression of perception itself.
There is almost nothing to identify.
Detail had disappeared. The horizon remained.
