Seen from Stanwell Tops, the horizon sits low beneath a vast field of grey. Diagonal rain appears to sweep through the photograph, softening the separation between sea and sky and turning a coastal view into something closer to drawing.
The vertical composition is important. Unlike the broad horizontal calm of the other works in Horizon, this picture gives the weather room to fall. The sea becomes a dark base while most of the frame belongs to atmosphere.
There is still a horizon, but it no longer feels like the dominant event. Rain has taken possession of the landscape.
I like photographs in which familiar places briefly stop looking familiar. Weather can do that remarkably quickly.
