Cloudscape strips the horizon back to tone, movement and direction.
A long exposure draws the clouds into broad horizontal bands that move across the frame in shades of grey. The Pacific below becomes another dark field, separated from the sky by a narrow, almost severe horizon.
Without colour, the landscape becomes less specific. Coalcliff remains the place from which the photograph was made, but place is no longer its principal subject. The image is about the relationship between something apparently permanent and everything passing around it.
The horizon gives the photograph its structure. Time provides almost everything else.
Cloud, weather and sea are transformed into layers rather than objects. What began as landscape becomes close to abstraction.
The horizon is the only fixed thing. Everything else is passing.
