The figure paddling beneath it provides the measure: what might otherwise become an almost abstract study of blue, texture and movement is suddenly understood as something physical and considerably larger than the person confronting it.
There is little of the conventional surfing photograph here. No completed manoeuvre and no triumphant rider. The photograph holds the less celebrated part—the effort of getting out through the water, and the unequal scale between surfer and sea.
