A shoulder and the line of a neck rise through a shallow field of focus. There are few hard edges. Instead, light changes gradually across the skin until one form seems to run into another.
At this distance the familiar can become uncertain. The photograph sits between bodily recognition and abstraction, which is one of the things that interests me throughout La Petite Mort. We know we are looking at a person, but the photograph asks us to spend more time with the shapes than with the identity of the subject.
