This second reclining study is warmer and more open than Recline I. The body is still tightly framed, but the softer tonal treatment allows its shape to emerge differently.
The photograph is concerned less with pose than with the way light travels across the torso. A shift in tone describes volume; a curve becomes an edge; familiar anatomy begins to read as a set of connected forms.
Together, the two Recline photographs show why I return to the human body photographically. Even when the subject remains still, a small change in light, viewpoint or framing can produce an entirely different picture.
