Very little is sharply defined. A neck, shoulder and fragment of dark hair occupy the frame, but focus has been allowed to drift until the body is experienced through tone and proximity rather than detail. Light areas merge into one another while a few darker shapes hold the composition together.

That softness is central to La Petite Mort. These photographs are not attempts to catalogue the body. They depend on fragments, sensation and the uncertainty of seeing something at very close range. Here the body remains present while almost becoming an abstract photograph.
