Recline I #0029

from $450.00

The reclining body is only partly given to us. Much of the photograph belongs to darkness, with the figure appearing gradually through changes in tone rather than being fully described.

That withholding is important. A shoulder, torso or curve becomes enough to establish the presence of a person, while the surrounding shadow gives the body room to become less literal. There is stillness here, but not passivity. The photograph depends on the relationship between what the light reveals and what it refuses to explain.

Within Bodyscape, this is one of the pictures in which the human figure comes closest to becoming a landscape of light and shadow.
