The body is stretched rather than posed for recognition. Cropping removes the face and concentrates attention on the torso, the reach of the figure and the changing lines created by movement.
What interests me here is the way an ordinary physical gesture reorganises the body. Curves lengthen, muscles shift and the space between light and shadow becomes part of the composition. It is recognisably human but moves towards abstraction.
Like the other early Bodyscape photographs, Reaching was made on 5×4 Polaroid black-and-white film. The immediate print gave the women I photographed the opportunity to see and approve the photographs as we made them—an important part of how this series came into being.
