At first glance this hardly reads as a figure photograph.
A close view of the abdomen has been reduced to sweeping areas of light and dark, with the navel forming a small, deep oval within the composition. The scale makes skin resemble terrain. Detail gives way to gradient, and the body becomes a landscape measured in centimetres rather than kilometres.
It is one of the more abstract photographs in La Petite Mort, and one that connects naturally with my broader interest in finding pictures rather than simply recording subjects. The body provides the material, but the photograph is really made from light, form and the act of looking closely.
