Varela, number 22, stands with his back to me, both hands gripping the fence as he watches the game. Another player enters from the right, absorbed in his own movement. Beyond them the playing field and distant city are visible through the wire.
Again, the fence is not incidental. It passes across bodies, faces and background and holds all those layers together.
I had come across the game by chance. What kept me there was not simply the softball but everything happening around it—the waiting, watching, conversations and small rituals that exist at the edge of the play.
