I found this softball game while wandering through Brooklyn on a weekend in October 2013.
The chain-link fence could easily have been something to photograph around. Instead, it became the picture. Its large, soft diamonds divide the foreground while the batter waits beyond them with the bat resting across his shoulder. Players and the neighbourhood spread out behind him.
There is action somewhere in the game, but this photograph is about the time between actions: waiting, watching and preparing.
I often find pictures in these overlooked intervals. The fence makes me an outsider to the game, but it also gives the photograph the structure that first made me stop and look.
