A hand opens at the far left of the picture and an arm runs almost horizontally back towards Lenio's body. Her head drops and turns in the opposite direction, while most of the frame remains dark.
I like the tension between the reach of that arm and the apparent inwardness of the rest of the figure. It is a large gesture, but it does not feel theatrical in the photograph. Instead, the surrounding darkness reduces it to line, weight and balance.
Dance continually offered me these momentary arrangements. Photography does something different with them: it removes what came immediately before and after and lets one otherwise fleeting gesture stand on its own.
