Lenio's arms pull the photograph almost from edge to edge. One reaches sideways while the other rises into the light; her head tilts back as though the movement is continuing beyond the instant recorded by the camera.
What interested me throughout this series was the way dance kept making and dismantling forms. In MoMA's subdued light I was working close to the limits of the camera, and that technical limitation became part of the pictures. Detail softens, the surrounding gallery disappears, and gesture becomes more important than description.
Here, Lenio seems briefly suspended between balance and release. The darkness gives the movement somewhere to exist rather than simply providing a background.
