This gesture has an almost sculptural directness. Lenio faces towards the camera while both elbows bend outwards and her hands turn down. Her head moves away from the symmetry, looking to one side.
The pose lasts only because the photograph does.
That was one of the pleasures of making this series. The performance was continuous, energetic and changing, but the camera kept finding small structures within it. In the low light, Lenio separates just enough from the darkness for the position of her arms, shoulders and face to carry the picture.
The large unoccupied area around her makes the gesture seem both physical and strangely solitary.
