‘Sunset Storm Clouds #0165 began as a black-and-white photograph and changed before the shutter was opened. I had loaded my Linhof 6×17 with Agfa Scala to photograph the approaching storm when the clouds behind me suddenly opened to the last sunlight. I removed the unexposed film and reloaded with Fuji Velvia. The resulting panorama exists because the light changed the picture—and I changed with it.
At the far right, the small white pump house stands almost alone, its illuminated doorway providing a quiet human counterpoint to the scale of sea and sky. The panoramic composition allows the weather to dominate, transforming the familiar architecture of the baths into a solitary marker at the edge of the ocean.’
