Moonrise #0023 was made on film with a 4×5 large-format camera during powerful surf at Merewether Ocean Baths. Huge waves were crossing the starting blocks, while water on the pool side buffeted the tripod. The exposure therefore depended not only on composition and light but on waiting—for the temporary lull in which camera, water and photographer were briefly still enough for the shutter to open.
