Buildings can become landscape when you stop looking at them as architecture.
Here their vertical forms stretch upwards into bands of blue, white and ochre. The street is compressed into the bottom of the frame, where a single car remains recognisable amongst the movement. Above it, the city seems to be pulling itself apart.
I was less interested in recording these particular buildings than in what happened to them while passing through the space between them.
The little fragment of ordinary traffic is important. Without it, the photograph might become completely abstract. With it, there is still a city down there somewhere.
That tension between recognition and disappearance is what makes the picture for me.
