I had stopped beside a rural road to photograph something in the distance, but the picture eventually appeared much closer to me.
The setting winter sun was passing through long grass moving in the wind. In Rainbow Grass #7598, individual stems are still occasionally visible, but they quickly dissolve into overlapping traces of green, blue, violet and gold.
There is less of a conventional landscape here than a dense accumulation of light and movement. The photograph came from watching an ordinary patch of grass long enough for it to become something else—one of those occasions when finding a picture meant letting go of the picture I had first intended to make.
