I made a series of photographs while walking along a wooden jetty on a cloudy day.
Later, I began layering the frames. Repetition broke the jetty apart while at the same time making its structure more insistent: grain, boards, shadows and whitewashed poles accumulated until the place became difficult to read in an ordinary way.
I was going through a difficult period at the time, and that inevitably affects how I now understand the picture. Despite its darkness, though, Fragmented came from persistence rather than defeat.
I had found a photograph where very little initially seemed to offer one. Making it—and finding a way through the layers—helped restore some confidence in both my seeing and the photographic process.
