This is the paper I make my prints on.

I crumpled a sheet of cotton rag paper and photographed it against a pale background, using the folds and their small shadows to reveal its thickness and texture. Removed from its usual role as the surface carrying a photograph, the paper becomes the subject itself.

I have often said that a picture isn't real for me until I can hold it. Crumpled takes that idea quite literally.

It is a simple picture, but an important one for me because printmaking is not something that happens after the photograph. The paper, its weight, surface and physical presence are part of the finished work.
