The salt lake occupies the lower half of the photograph, its surface marked by subtle horizontal bands and reflections. Two low hills interrupt the distant horizon, catching enough light to appear almost luminous beneath a vast dark sky.

Black and white removes the expected colours of the outback and makes the landscape feel more ambiguous.

The scale is still immense, but the photograph is quiet.

Water—or the suggestion of it—earth, two simple landforms and an approaching darkness are enough. Everything else has been allowed to disappear.
