The landscape seems to have been exposed layer by layer.
A broad flat-topped formation rises across the middle distance, surrounded by bands of pale earth, ochre, rust and sparse vegetation. From the elevated viewpoint, the foreground opens gradually towards the mesa before the country disappears into an almost colourless horizon.
Scale is difficult to judge.
That uncertainty is part of what attracted me to the landscape. Forms that initially appear small reveal themselves as substantial geological structures separated by immense areas of open country.
The photograph is as much about the space surrounding the formation as the formation itself.
Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park is on the traditional country of the Antakirinja Matuntjara Yankunytjatjara people and is Aboriginal owned and co-managed.
