The DIP sign stands slightly apart from the road while the bitumen bends gently away towards a distant horizon. Beyond it there is little except low vegetation, pale earth and sky.
The sign suggests something the photograph barely seems to support: water.
These floodways interrupt the apparently endless roads around Coober Pedy, evidence that this dry country can change quickly when rain finally comes.
I like the contradiction—the warning of water in a landscape that appears almost incapable of holding it.
