A Casuarina stands apart from the low vegetation of the surrounding country.
Its dense, irregular canopy occupies the centre of the panoramic frame, with branches appearing and disappearing through masses of fine foliage. The openness around it gives the tree an individuality that might easily be missed while travelling at highway speed.
Much of the journey north involved looking into apparently repetitive roadside vegetation.
Slowing down changed that.
Individual trees began to emerge from the landscape almost as characters—each shaped differently by climate, exposure and time.
This was one that made me stop.
