Here almost everything has disappeared.
The long exposure has reduced the pool and ocean to pale tonal fields. The horizon is barely present. Water moves around the starting blocks until their physical surroundings become uncertain, yet the black numerals remain remarkably definite.
They become less like functional markings and more like a sequence suspended within the photograph.
Numbers measure things. Distance. Order. Time.
In this picture they seem to be measuring something less certain—the passage from one remembered moment to another while the place itself remains.
