Water defines this photograph twice.
Beyond the Canoe Pool is the ocean, softened by time until its surface becomes almost indistinguishable from the pale horizon. Closer to the camera, water spills continuously over the pool wall.
During the long exposure those individual movements accumulate into a veil.
The little chain railing remains sharply recognisable above it—a fragile human structure surrounded by a much larger movement of water. It gives the photograph scale and anchors a scene that might otherwise dissolve almost completely into tone.
Ocean pools fascinate me because they impose geometry on something that has none.
Edges, walls and railings tell the water where it should be.
The water keeps moving anyway.
