This second view is almost the opposite of #0004. Rather than following the building from pavement to sky, the panoramic frame cuts away the street and concentrates on the upper façade.
The Flatiron rises diagonally into a large open area of pale sky, giving the architecture more space than its dense Manhattan setting normally allows. Repetition in the windows and masonry becomes pattern, while the curved corner keeps the building from becoming entirely abstract. It was photographed on film using a Hasselblad XPan.
#0003 is less descriptive and makes better use of the XPan format. #0004 is recognisably “the Flatiron Building”; #0003 becomes more about seeing.
